ANSM strengthening the regulation of pseudoephedrine
The French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) announces a major change in the classification of pseudoephedrine. From now on, this substance is listed under List I of poisonous substances in all its forms. Additionally, medications containing pseudoephedrine that are not combined with other active substances are removed from List II. This measure aims to strengthen the safety of medications containing this molecule. The decision will take effect on December 9, 2024.

Revision of the European recommendation on sunscreen products: ANSES Opinion for better consumer protection
The European Commission is revising the 2006 recommendation regarding safety and efficacy claims for sunscreen products. The aim is to provide consumers with clearer information to help them better choose and use these products. ANSES supports this revision by calling for more stringent recommendations to ensure better protection against UV rays.
Sunscreen products must protect against UVA, responsible for skin aging, and UVB, responsible for sunburns and skin cancer. ANSES recommends simplifying labeling by removing the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and the UVA logo, focusing on three protection categories: low, medium, and high. This would clarify the overall protection level.
ANSES also emphasizes the need to differentiate sunscreen products from cosmetics containing UV filters without the primary goal of sun protection, to avoid confusion among consumers. Additionally, the quantity of product to apply should be clearly stated on the labels.
Finally, ANSES calls for consideration of the environmental impact of UV filters, particularly on aquatic ecosystems and corals, and recommends banning claims of environmental friendliness without proof of safety.
